Computer Products
Our Information Technology Services department (ITS) advises students on computer purchases. For software, peripherals, and supplies, the Bookstore is the place to go!

ACADEMIC DISCOUNTS ON SOFTWARE.
Swarthmore College is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP). The forces of JourneyEd (a leading academic on-line resource), the National Association of College Stores, and AICUP, joined together, bring you amazing savings opportunities. Right now, you can buy Microsoft Office Standard for $69.98*! Macromedia Dreamweaver XP 2004 is only $99.98* and Adobe Acrobat Standard is only $99.98*. There are many other software titles available at academic prices. You can order these items through our Technology e-store. If you are buying a new computer, check to see what the price is without the software bundle. You may do better buying the academically-priced software separately.

COMPUTER SUPPLIES.
We stock many computer supplies including network cables, recordable and rewritable CD's & DVD's, jump drives, ink jet printer cartridges & tanks, computer speakers, microphones, replacement mice & keyboards, wrist rests & mouse pads, disc holders & CD holders, cables, security kits, surge protectors, cleaning supplies, and more. Click over to our Computer Supplies tab to see some of the basics we stock. If we don't stock what you need, we can order it (and generally receive it in just a day or two). Or you can order it directly through our Technology e-store.

ITS DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

Microsoft Office.
The folks at ITS recommend that students use Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office Standard includes Word (word processor), Excel (spreadsheet), PowerPoint (presentation graphics), and Outlook (e-mail, personal information manager). Microsoft Office Professional adds Access, Microsoft's database software. The AICUP pricing on Microsoft prices are the best we've ever seen. Make sure you check those prices before buying elsewhere. And, again, if you're buying a new computer, ask for the price without the software. You may be able to save some money buying the software separately at low AICUP pricing.

Lock Down Kit.
The ITS department also recommends that you use a "lock down kit" to secure your computer. These kits have cables and locks to secure your laptop or desktop computer. We have kits in the store, on our web site (under the Computer Supplies tab), or via our Technology e-store.

Ethernet Card.
You will need an Ethernet Card in your computer so that you can connect to our campus network. We carry ITS-approved cards for laptops (again, under the Computer Supplies tab). If you have a desktop computer, be sure to get the card before arriving on campus. We are not allowed to sell anything through the store that must be installed. You can always buy an Ethernet card through our Technology e-store but you'll have to install it yourself.

Network Cable.
You will need a network cable to connect to our campus network. The ITS staff recommends a 25' cable which, of course, we carry. We also carry longer and shorter cables if you have the need. We keep plenty of these in stock and they're available on our web site (you guessed it--under the Computer Supplies tab!) or through our Technology e-store. You might want to wait until you get to campus and know what length of cable you really need.

E-mail Software.
Just FYI, you don't need to buy or bring any e-mail software. You will get the software and your e-mail account information from the ITS staff during your Orientation.

*Only students or employees of academic institutions are eligible for Academic Prices. And some academic prices are exclusively for students. Although we don't expect any changes, all prices are subject to change.
